Chinese Kung-Fu or "Wu-Shu" is one of the oldest martial arts systems and can be traced as far back as 2,000 BC. The evolutionary history of Kung- Fu is varied and colourful. It is believed that a Buddhist monk at the famous Shao-Lin Temple devised various methods of exercise to help fellow monks be more alert for their long hours of religious study and meditation. He believed that "A Fit Body would lead to a Fit Mind". At this time, many monks were being attacked and even killed by bandits while travelling through the country-side, so along with their exercises they developed fighting skills. Many of these skills were learned while observing animals and insects in combat and by adapting these movements, whole fighting systems were developed such as tiger, crane, monkey, and many others. The use of weapons both in defense and attack were incorporated into their repertoire. Apart from the "Shao-Lin" many other family systems were developed, and even today they are still handed down from generation to generation. Kung-Fu can be broken into two sections "Hard" and "Soft".

The "Hard" system involves mainly external methods of development while the "Soft" systems such as "Tai-Chi" are practiced mainly for health and exercise, although can be applied to self-defense situations. In recent years, Kung-Fu has been pop ularised by movies. The difference between screen fiction and school training are worlds apart. However the exposure on screen has helped increase public interest and up and down the country more and more people are practising Kung-Fu and not just the young but all ages. In the competition circuit, Kung-Fu is also making its mark.
