Anthony O Brien graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1970. He trained as a potter in the USA with a protégé of Marguerite Wildenhain, the Bauhaus potter, and in Denmark with Tue Poulsen. However, the single greatest influence was from the formidable English potter Michael Cardew, in whose Wenford Bridge Pottery he spent the summer of 1973.
Description
In 1972 he set up his Ballsbridge Pottery with Jim Galligan, subsequently joined by Deirdre McLoughlin and Cormac Boydell. Music has always been a parallel interest, and in 1979 he trained as a maker of viols and voilins. He won prizes for instruments in the R.D.S. National Crafts Competition in 1979, 1980 and 1981. Meanwhile he continued to make domestic pottery for private commissions. In 1990 he won first prize for decorative ceramics in the R.D.S. National Crafts Competition, and decided to return to full time pottery specialising in large scuptural pieces and decorated domestic ware. UNIQUE POTS: What's in a name? Unique Pots are genuinely hand-made and decorated from start to finish by one person, Anthony O Brien. People buy Craft Pottery because it is not standarised, not the result of mechanised production lines, because it has a life and beauty that comes from the potter's artistry. Unique Pots are individual, never exactly the same. The blue and white table-ware decoration is painted onto the unfired glaze with brushes. No transfers, sponges or other "print" methods are used. Handles are all individually pulled, not extruded by machine. Spouts are thrown, all bowls, dishes and plates have turned footrings. Everything in Nature, from the largest galaxy to the smallest microbe is unique. Every piece of Unique Pottery by Anthony O Brien is an individual. Beauty takes time. Each piece is signed with the "Anto" mark and dated. This table-ware is high-temperature earthenware: dish washer, microwave and oven-proof.
