Lough Beach is a large lough of volcanic origin, nearly 4 miles long by about a half mile wide. It can be approached from Letterkenny by taking the N56 and turning left on the L77 Gweedore road, or by taking the L82 road from Gweedore. As well as a good stock of brown trout the lough holds occasional salmon, and the sea trout arrive in August. The brown trout fishing can vary greatly. One day your catch will only average 6oz, while another day the trout will run from a half lb to 1lb with the chance of a 2-lb or 3-lb fish, usually taken arund the islands. The sea trout run late and it is definitely August before the fishing picks up. When it does, it can be really good with up to 20 trout to the boat per day and there is always the chance of a 3-lb or 4-lb fish. The south west end is the favourite fishing area. Only fly fishing and dapping are permitted and favourite patterns are Connemara Black, Fiery Brown, Peter Ross, Teal, Blue and Silver and Alexandra. There are three boats with outboards for hire.
