The finest and best preserved of all the town fortifications of Ireland are the walls of the city of Derry, or Londonderry as it became known after the city was granted to the London Companies by a charter of James 1 in 1613. It was these planters who laid out the town on a cross-shaped street grid and surrounded it with town walls between 1613 and 1618.

Ballyarnet Country Park, Derry, Derry
This exhibition centre was erected to commemorate the unexpected landing of Amelia Earhart on her historic solo flight across the Atlantic on 21 May 1932.

A museum guide is available for a tour of the centre, who will show where Amelia Earhart landed and will answer any questions on the event.
The centre is located to the north of the city within Ballyarnett natural park. Visits are by appointment....

Situated outside the walled city and overlooking the River Foyle this neo-Gothic style building houses one of the largest four-faced clocks in the British Isles. It also houses various historical artefacts and acts as a civic and cultural centre for the people of Derry. This building houses the local Council Chambers and Mayor's Parlour which are richly ornamented and contain a beautiful range of Stained glass windows.

Welcome Picture of Saint Eugenes Cathedral
Creggan Street, Great James Street, Derry, Derry
The foundation stone of this cathedral was laid in July 1851 but not dedicated until May 1873. Built of Newry sandstone its tower stands 77m high with a 2.4m granite cross on top. The stained-glass windows were designed by Meyer of Munich and installed in 1891 and the gardens grounds and gate lodge were completed in 1905.

The city has two wonderful cathedrals which are celebrated annually through the Two Cathedrals Festival, a programme of music and prayer open to everyone.

Welcome Picture of Saint Columbs Cathedral

Saint Columbs Cathedral was built in 1633. Stained glass depicts heroic scenes form the great siege of 1688/89. The keys of the gates which were closed against the Jacobites are displayed in the chapterhouse.

Features include audio visual presentation on the siege, and history of the cathedral. There's also wheelchair access but it's worth noting that there are shallow steps at the entrance to chapterhouse.
