It was built by Sir Edward Doddington early in the 17th century on lands granted to the Skinners' Company of London as part of the Plantation of Ulster, though it is not known who actually lived there. On the south side of the bawn-a garden-sized enclosure protected by a high wall-are the remains of a simple two-storey house, windowless on the south side where it adjoined the ancient road from Dungiven to Derry. At the eastern end of the house, and also at the diagonally opposite corner of the bawn, there is a round bastion with gun-loops for defence. House and bawn were abandoned by around 1700.
