the court house

Situated on Washington Street, the Courthouse was built in 1835 and designed by George Richard Pain. The front is a broad Corinthian portico raised on a platform of eleven steps. Over the padiment is a bronze group representing Justice, supported by law and mercy, and backed by a large copper dome.
In 1891 the interior of the Court House was destroyed by fire and it was redesigned by W. H Hill who redeveloped the court house to a Rennaissance style form the previous Neo-Cassical style it was.

Since then the Courthouse went under major restoration and refurbishment between 1994 and 2005, and it reopened again for court hearings.
