The 49-bell Carillon of St. Colmans's Cathedral Cobh is the only instrument in this country and is the largest in Ireland and Britain. It also includes Ireland's largest bell, named St Colman. 2008 marks the 81st year of Cobh Summer Carillon Recitals, making this one of the largest running annual musical events in the region. The recitals were commenced in 1925 by Staf Gebruers (1920-1970), the first Cathedral Carillonneur and the father of the present incumbent, and have taken place every year since, with the exception of 1948 when maintenance work prevented the instrument from being played.
