Situated in the harbour of Glengariff, in Bantry Bay, is a small island called Garnish Island. It is also known as Illaunacullin or Ilnacullin, meaning island of holly. This garden of rare natural beauty has to be seen to be believed.
Ilnacullin is known worldwide for its huge selection of plants and its Italian Garden full of exotic plants. The vivid colours change with the seasons as the variety of plants means there are always plants in bloom.
A local ferry service provides a non stop ferry service to the island as well as water tours of beautiful Glengarriff Harbour, winding through many of the tiny islands, including Seal Island where one may see up to 250 harbour seals at any one time!
Although there is ample fishing opportunity in the area fishing from Garnish Island is prohibited. There are many different types of flora and fauna to be seen on the island and it the perfect place to enjoy a pleasant walk with a difference. There are many lovely views of the surrounding mountains from the island making the perfect photo opportunity.
