Emigrants left Ireland from three harbours - Londondery or Derry, Dublin (usually to Liverpool and then to the Americas), and the most popular Cobh (pronounced Cove). Cobh harbour is steeped in nautical history. Cobh was the harbour for the first transatlantic steamship crossing to the Americas in 1838 as well as the last port of call on the ill-fated maiden voyage of one of the greatest luxury liners of the twentieth century, the Titanic. The emigration trial that took place in Americas in what became known as coffin ships because of severe overcrowding.
