Ennis takes its name from 'Inis' which is the Gaelic name for Island. The town dates back to the 11th century and is full of character with its narrow streetcapes, quaint shops and shopfronts. It also has many streets, monuments and markets which give the town a medival feeling. The town has a rich and vibrant history which is best explored on foot. A booklet detailing a well-marked tour of the town is obtainable at the Tourist Office. The tourist trail strarts from Bank Place and takes in a number of items of historical and archeological interest. These include Ennis Abbey, built in 1250, the West Clare Railway Engine, the O Connell monument, the Courthouse and the De Valera Museum.
