Slieve Elva Caves Poll na Gollum

Slieve Elva has already been noted for its multiplicity of underground passages and caverns. The road we are now traversing is on the southern slope of the mountain and, if the tourist should wish to see something of the cave systems, he or she should take the road branching to the right about 4 km from the Cahermacnaghten junction. Poll Elva is the first opening met with on this by-road. A little further on is Poll na Gollum. These two entrances open into a linked system, which has nearly 12 km of charted passageways. But it is advisable for all but experienced and well-equipped pot-holers to avoid venturing near the cave. As you return down the by-road, you may see Cahercloggaun on the right, an O'Loghlen castle of the 15th century, now much dilapidated.
