About 70 dolphins in the Shannon Estuary and many of their favoured areas are close to the shore near Carrigaholt. The Shannon dolphins are significant because they are one of only four groups of resident dolphins in Europe. Seeing the dolphins from Carrigaholt is practically guaranteed. At certain times of the day it is possible to see the dolphins by taking a walk along the coastline. You may enquire in the village for directions to the best look-out point. Alternatively, you can take a short trip with Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt and in no time, be in the company of dolphins. On the two hour trip, you will learn about the dolphins, estuarine marine life and other features from your guide. You will also have the unique opportunity to use a hydrophone and listen to how the dolphins communicate.
Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt has been losely observing the Shannon bottle nose dolphins for ten years and has become familiar with the groups behaviour patterns as well as individuals within the group.

Description
Dolphins are naturally inquisitive and enjoy a bit of sport, so they come up to the boat of their own volition- and perhaps their own curiousity about us. We often wonder who is watching whom? Calves are born each year and are usually encountered during the boat trips. Every trip is different and is always determined by the dolphins, whether they are feeding, travelling or socialising in that playful, exuberant way only dolphins know how.
Location
Ireland's only resident group of bottle nose dolphins can be observed from the picturesque West Clare village of Carrigaholt, situated at the mouth of the River Shannon.
