Huntington Castle The oldest part of Huntington Castle is a tower house built by the first and last Lord Esmonde. The dining room was formerly the old hall of the castle. It's fireplace has the date 1625 inscribed on the chimmney piece which is believed to be the year the Castle was built. After the death of Lord Esmonde, it was inherited by Sir Lawrence Esmonde who converted the tower house into a residence. Sir John, his son, built a two storey wing. No new additions were made until 1849 when it was inherited by Alexander Durdin. Durdin inherited the castle from his great-uncle who had married two Esmonde sisters (in succession!) and died childless. His attempts at renovation caused part of the structure to collapse and resulted in trying to patch-up the damage. His daughter Helen is credited with bringing electricity to Huntington. A light was kept burning so that the locals could inspect it!
