New Laws For Getting Married in Ireland

Are you thinking of tying the knot in Ireland? Did you know that new marriage legislation introduced in Ireland in November 2007, means that for the first time civil marriages can now take place outside of a registry office.

Prior to November 2007, a civil marriage ceremony could only take place at a Registry Office. However, couples can make their big day really special with civil marriages now allowed to take place at a venue of choice, be it a luxury hotel, a magnificent castle or an old world country-style manor.

Under the new legislation the venue has to meet certain criteria - for example, the building has to be a 'fixed structure', the setting for the ceremony has to be 'dignified', public witnesses have to be facilitated and no food or drink is to be consumed during the service. The Health Service Executive will also carry out an assessment of the venue prior to the big day.

If you'd like a hotel ceremony then check out hotels in Ireland – there's almost 500 hotels scattered the length and breadth of the country so whether you're looking for modest 3 star or a deluxe 5 star – you're sure to find something to suit you.

There are some really enchanting Ireland castle hotels dotted throughout the island, which are perfect for that fairytale wedding. And if you prefer to go with a charming old style country house hotel in Ireland – there are plenty of those too!

My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in the summer of 2010 and would like to renew our wedding vows during our stay  there. Where do I go to look  for customs, laws, and places to get married? We were interested in having the services in a small old church if possible. Can you help?

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your comment!

According to Citizens Information you can get a 'church blessing' in Ireland. View the section "Renewing your Wedding Vows in Ireland" on this page for more.

Hi Ken

Where in Ireland would you like to renew your wedding vows? From what you described "small, old church" I think St.Finbarr's Oratory in Gougane Barra would be perfect for you. It's said to be one of the smallest churches in Ireland and it has a magical setting in beautiful west Cork! Mairead

Can you set me in the direction of the laws of getting married in Ireland and maybe some recommendations on a small wedding. We will have around 20 guests. Thank you very much for your help and time. Sincerely Jennifer

Slante'

I am planning a wedding for a cousin of mine.  They want to be married in Donegal in the summer of 2011. I know there is alot of paperwork to be completed and they would like to get started.  Where do we begin?  I have found houses for families to rent during this time at a good price, so would like to get a few things confirmed as much as possible.  I would also like to contact "Leo's Tavern" for a small reception.  My husband and I have been there singing with Leo and LOVED it, to say the least!!!  Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you.
