Dublin's Luas tram has proven to be an excellent way of getting around Dublin's busy city centre. It's fairly reasonable on the pocket, it's on time, you won't have to wait in traffic jams and the best bit is that you can get to see Dublin as you travel as the Luas travels above ground.
About the Luas
The LUAS is Dublin city's light rail tram system. Luas is the Irish word for 'speed'. It consists of two lines, a red line and a green line which are not connected. The green line has 13 stops and runs from St. Stephen's Green to Sandyford south of the city. The red line has 23 stops and runs from Connolly Station to Hueston Station and south west to Tallaght. For timetable and more info check out the Luas official website.
Dublin hotels near the Green Luas Line
The green Luas line starts in the city centre at St. Stephen's Green at the top of Grafton Street. If you want to stay within easy reach of this Luas connection then choose hotels like the O'Callaghan Stephen's Green Hotel or the Mercer Hotel.
At the Harcourt Street Luas stop you'll find hotel like the Russel Court Hotel, the Jackson Court Hotel and the Harcourt Hotel and the luxurious Hilton Hotel is located opposite the Charlemont stop.

If you prefer to be outside the city then why not stay at The Beacon Hotel which is within walking distance of the 'Sandyford' stop. This is the last stop on the Luas line.
The green Luas line is really handy if you want to go shopping in Dundrum or you need to go to the Sandyford Industrial Estate.
Dublin hotels near the Red Luas Line
The red line is much longer than the green line and runs from Connolly Station all the way to Tallaght – a journey that take approximately 46 minutes.
If you want to get from the green line to the red line you'll have to walk from the St. Stephen's Green stop on the green line to the Abbey Street stop on the red line which is about a 15 minute walk.
The red line starts in the city center at Connolly station. If you want to stay close by this stop then choose the North Star Hotel or the Ripley Court Hotel which are both within a short walk.
One of the most central Luas stops in the city is the Abbey Street stop. This stop can be found just off O'Connell Street – Dublin's main street. Just a few steps from this stop is the Abbey Hotel but if this is'nt available any of the hotels on O'Connell Street around the corner should do. The Royal Dublin Hotel, Cassidy's Hotel, The Gresham Hotel or Lynams Hotel.
Hotels within walking distance of the Smithfield stop include the Park Inn Dublin and the Comfort Inn Smithfield.
Hueston Station is another stop on the red line. This is where the city's main train station is located and the luas stop can be found just in front of it. If you want to be based here then choose the Ashling Hotel which is literally across the street from the station.
The popularity of the Red Cow Moran Hotel can be attributed to its fantastic location at the Red Cow Interchange. The beauty of this hotel, is that it's located just across the road from a Luas stop so that you're in the city in no time.
Tallaght is the last stop on the red line. If you want to be close to this stop then stay at the Glashaus Hotel, The Tower Hotel, Abberley Court or the Plaza Hotel.
The red line provides easy access to places of interest like Henry Street, the Four Courts, the National Museum of Ireland, Hueston Station, St. James's Hospital, Tallaght Hospital and the Square Shopping Centre in Tallaght.
So stay at one of these Dublin hotels and forget about the hassle of driving in the city.
Hope this helps you choose the perfect hotel for your stay in Dublin. If you've any queries on Dublin hotels just leave a comment in the box below and we'll get back to you.

I would have liked to have found a list of hotels along the line so that I could enjoy non-city centre hotel prices and have the convenience of the line to go to town. You seem to have approached the topic from the opposite - interesting!- #2

Hi Una, Thanks for your comment. We've tried to provide useful information for those people who are planning to use the Luas tram as their main mode of transport for getting around the city. However, if you're planning to stay outside of central Dublin but want to use the Luas to travel into the city centre then you should check out: for the Green Line - hotels in Dublin 6 area and for the Red Line - check out hotels in Tallaght area (see list in article above) while both Bewleys Newlands Cross Hotel and Red Cow Moran Hotel have easy access to the Luas. We really hope this is of some assistance. Do come back and let us know if these suggestions were useful. Remember, you can contact our Travel Advisors and they'll be more than happy to help too. All the best, Editor- #3

Hi there,I'm living in galway and as a treat for my daughter's 14th birthday, I want to take her and her 2 granny's (all 3 celebrate their birthdays within 48 hours of each other !) to the Helix in March. I intend to travel to dublin by train( as she has never travelled on one) so hotel or B&B needs to be on luas line. Is the Helix on the luas line, if so, which one green or red ? Any suggestions . . . . .PLEASE !!!

Hi there,While sitting on the Luas last week at the Red Cow stop I noticed a bus operating to Donegal that was picking and dropping people at the Red Cow Luas stop. I'm travelling to Donegal next week and this would be much easier for me than Busarus, but I can't remember the name of the company operating the service. I have searched everything I can think of to find the name of the bus co, but no luck. Can you help?
Many thanks.
