Description
The rich displays of archaeology, ethnography, art, history and natural sciences reflect the Museum's vast collections. An extensive programme of temporary exhibitions and events is organised annually.
Local history galleries include an impressive display of steam engines, waterwheels and linen machinery, while Made in Belfast provides a potted history of Belfast industries of the last 100 years.
The Living Sea gallery takes the visitor on an eleven minute voyage of discovery on the sea bed. It uses thousands of models with sophisticated linkage of sight and sound. Other displays include butterflies, birds and rare animals.
Visitors to the art galleries can enjoy A Celebration of Riches. This exhibition is taken from the wealth of the Ulster Museum's vast collections of fine and decorative arts and provides a showcase for many of the Museum's most spectacular pieces from the 16th century to the present day. On display for the first time is The Countess of Kildare's Toilet Service, a stunning, early 18th century 28 piece silver-gilt toilet service, which belonged to the wife of the 19th Earl of Kildare.
The famous Turner painting The Dawn of Christianity-Flight into Egypt and Morris Louis ' The Golden Age are included in the exhibition along with glass ceramics and sculpture.
The Museum Shop has a good selection of books, crafts, gifts, reproductions, replicas and exhibition-related souvenirs. The Collections Café, on the third floor overlooking Botanic Gardens, offers a range of refreshments, snacks and light meals.
The Ulster Museum is close to all main routes and within walking distance of a number of hotels and guest houses and bus and train stations.
