The urban environment is an important part of Belfast's heritage and is enhanced by the unique blend of features and characters of the city many parks, old and new, large and small Annual events promote interest and activity in the parks, and include lectures, demonstrations, guided walks, bus tours, band performances, children's activities, outdoor summer schemes, educational programmes and major events such as Rose Week and the Spring and Autumn Flower Shows.
Opened in 1873, Falls Park became the second public park in Belast. At one time it contained an outdoor swimming pool, known locally at The Cooler, which was eventually closed in 1980. Today there are sports pitches, a bowling green and attractive bedding displays, and the park is pleasantly situated against the background of Black Mountain. A small stream flows through the open parkland, characterised by many fine mature trees.
