Queens University Belfast

Queen's University in the heart of Belfast has been regarded as the seat of learning for this part of the world for a century and a half and has attracted (and still does) many famous students in the past. Founded in 1845 by Queen Victoria, Queens University is located within walking distance of the city centre. It was designed and built by Charles Lanyon (building took 4 years) and has grown in size over the years - it now has over 300 buildings. When it first opened its doors in 1849 it had only about 90 students, today it has over 24,000.

Queens University is one of the country's oldest universities with a long tradition of learning and has gained an international reputation over the years. Past pupils include actors Simon Callow, Liam Neeson and Stephen Rea, Irish comedian Patrick Kielty and poets Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon.

The university's visitor centre – Queen's Welcome Centre – is located in the Lanyon Building, only about a 15 minute walk from the city centre, and attracts in excess of 25,000 visitors each year. Here you'll find several exhibitions and displays as well as excellent visitor information.

Queens (as it's often abbreviated to) has always aimed to enhance the learning experience of students. Faculties at the university today include: the School of Biological Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Education, School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, School of English, School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology, School of History and Anthropology, School of Languages, Literatures and Performing Arts, School of Law, Queen’s University Management School, School of Mathematics and Physics, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Music and Sonic Arts, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Pharmacy, School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering, School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy, School of Psychology, an the School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work.
