Dublin to get its own underground

The people of Dublin will welcome this news with a sight of relief as work for the long awaited Dublin underground has finally begun. But we will have to wait a little while longer as this route will not be up and running until 2015!

Dublin is a small, compact and busy city which gets very congested at rush hours. However, it does boast some excellent forms of public transport like the Luas tram which has two lines in the city, the DART train which runs mainly from the city centre north and south along the coast and of course, the Dublin Bus service. The new underground aims to intergrate all rail networks in the city, making it easier to get around.

The new underground line will run for about 5km from the Docklands area through the heart of the city to Heuston. Subway stations are proposed at the Docklands, Pearse Street, St. Stephen's Green, Christchurch and Heuston.

This new DART underground is expected to cost in the region of €2 billion, will run every 3 minutes and carry up to 70,000 passengers every hour.
